Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features

FromSoftware has confirmed that the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign will not include an in-game messaging system, a staple feature of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, known for its community engagement and contributions to the Soulsborne experience (whether helpful, misleading, or humorous), is being omitted to maintain a streamlined, intense gameplay experience.

However, Nightreign isn't abandoning all asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic returns, improved to allow players to not only witness but also loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This enhances the shared experience without the time commitment of a messaging system.

FromSoftware aims for a "compressed RPG" in Nightreign, prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer engagement. This focus, along with the game's three-day structure, contributes to the decision to forgo the messaging system. The goal is a varied, high-action experience with minimal downtime.

Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
