Former Starfield Artist Reveals Reason Graphic Violence Was Cut
Summary
- Starfield's toned-down violence was a deliberate decision, primarily due to technical limitations.
- The style also wouldn't align with Starfield's overall tone, according to Dennis Mejillones, a character artist who worked on both Starfield and Fallout 4 at Bethesda.
Starfield, Bethesda's ambitious space exploration RPG, initially envisioned a far more violent experience than what players ultimately encountered. While Bethesda's first-person shooters are known for their visceral combat, the studio opted for a less graphic approach in Starfield. This decision, however, wasn't a last-minute change; it was a conscious choice made to address several key factors.
Although Starfield avoids gratuitous gore, its combat remains a significant element, featuring engaging gunplay and melee encounters. Many players consider the combat system a substantial improvement over Fallout 4, highlighting the careful design and refinement of its shooting and melee mechanics. While initially, more graphic violence was considered, Bethesda ultimately decided to scale back the more extreme visual details.
Dennis Mejillones, a character artist who contributed to both Starfield and Fallout 4, shed light on this creative decision during a recent interview on the Kiwi Talkz YouTube podcast. Mejillones confirmed that initial plans included decapitations and other intense kill animations. However, significant technical hurdles proved insurmountable. The sheer variety of suits and helmets within the game made realistically animating such violent actions extremely challenging, risking unrealistic or buggy visuals. Given Starfield's persistent technical challenges even after several major updates, this decision to avoid further graphical complexities seems prudent.
Starfield's Restrained Violence: A Technical and Tonal Choice
The technical difficulties of animating realistic decapitations weren't the sole reason for reducing graphic violence. Mejillones also noted that Fallout's over-the-top gore often contributes to its humorous tone, a stylistic choice that wouldn't seamlessly translate to Starfield's more serious and realistic sci-fi setting. While the game occasionally nods to Bethesda's more irreverent titles—a recent addition of Doom-inspired content serves as an example—its overall atmosphere is grounded in a more mature and believable depiction of space exploration. Intense, unrealistic executions, while potentially exciting, could have disrupted the game's immersive quality.
Despite this, some fans continue to advocate for even greater realism. Criticisms have been leveled at Starfield's comparatively tame nightclubs, highlighting a perceived disconnect compared to the grittier depictions in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect. Adding tongue-in-cheek violence might have exacerbated these concerns, further undermining the game's intended realism. Ultimately, Bethesda's decision to temper the game's gore, while deviating from the studio's previous shooter trends, appears to have been a well-considered choice.
