The goal was to inject a sense of realism into the game, reflecting the life-or-death stakes for both the player and the enemy forces on the battlefield.

Despite the increased challenge, Sho ensured that the game remains accessible and rewarding. He emphasized that even players less experienced with action games can enjoy Dynasty Warriors: Origins by learning the mechanics progressively. "Even if you're not that good at action games, if you learn them in order, you can play comfortably and feel a sense of success," he stated. Balancing the traditional "musou" genre's exhilaration with the gritty realism of a war-torn battlefield was a significant challenge, but one that the team embraced wholeheartedly.

Returning To Its "Origins"

A notable departure from previous entries, Dynasty Warriors: Origins breaks from the series' traditional numbering system. Instead of being labeled as Dynasty Warriors 10, this game marks the first non-numbered title in the franchise's history. The "Origins" in the title underscores its focus on the initial chapters of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, covering only the story up to the Battle of Chibi, also known as the Battle of the Red Cliffs.

In an interview with TheGamer at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Sho elaborated on this decision. "We really wanted to be thorough and intense in telling this story; it’s one of the epic points, so we’re only focusing on up until that point," he explained. This approach allows for a deeper exploration of the narrative's early stages.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the latest main installment in the franchise after a seven-year hiatus, draws its inspiration from the Chinese novel, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Set during the Han Dynasty, the game follows an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, as he navigates the tumultuous landscape of ancient China, where various factions vie for dominance.
