2XKO's Alpha Playtest: Addressing Player Feedback and Refining Gameplay
Four days into its Alpha Lab Playtest, 2XKO has already garnered significant player feedback. Director Shaun Rivera has publicly acknowledged these concerns and outlined plans for addressing them.
Taming Combos and Enhancing the Tutorial:
The playtest, fueled by the game's League of Legends connection, attracted a large player base who quickly discovered and showcased devastating, potentially unfair combos online. While Rivera praised the "creative" nature of these extended, often "Touch of Death" (TOD) combos, he also recognized the need for balance. The development team plans to reduce the frequency of TODs, aiming to maintain the game's fast-paced action while ensuring fair and engaging matches. While some TODs were anticipated, the team is analyzing data and feedback to refine combo mechanics. The goal is to make TODs exceptional achievements requiring significant skill.
The tutorial mode has also received criticism. While the game's core mechanics are considered relatively easy to grasp, mastering its complexities presents a steeper learning curve. The lack of skill-based matchmaking in the playtest exacerbated this, often pitting novices against experienced players. Professional player Christopher "NYChrisG" even described 2XKO as potentially niche due to its complex six-button system and intricate gameplay, comparing it to titles like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Rivera confirmed that the tutorial will undergo significant improvements, aiming for a more comprehensive and user-friendly experience, possibly drawing inspiration from tutorials in games like Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6. A dedicated Reddit thread actively solicits player suggestions for tutorial enhancements.
Enthusiasm Persists Despite Feedback:
Despite the criticisms, 2XKO has generated considerable enthusiasm. Professional player William "Leffen" Hjelte streamed the game for 19 consecutive hours, and Twitch viewership peaked at an impressive 60,425 on the first day.
While the game is still in closed alpha with no release date, the substantial player engagement and the wealth of constructive feedback suggest strong potential and a burgeoning community.
