Path of Exile 2 to Prioritize Ascendancies Over New Classes in Updates

Path of Exile 2's game director announced that upcoming patches will shift focus from introducing new classes to enhancing other game elements. Discover the reasoning behind this decision and insights into the game's current development.
Path of Exile 2 to Scale Back on New Character Classes
More Ascendancies to Take Center Stage

In a recent Q&A, Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers revealed that new classes won’t be a priority in future updates due to their unpredictable development timelines.
When questioned about expectations for new classes in every patch, Rogers explained that the team has reconsidered its approach. He noted, We’d love to include a new class with every release, but we’ve learned that anchoring an expansion’s development to a new class was a misstep.
He highlighted the challenge of balancing fixed release dates with the variable scope of content. Focusing on the Huntress for the next patch, for instance, led to repeated delays in the release schedule.

Rogers elaborated, The Huntress was a must for the next patch, which forced us to adjust the release date repeatedly, extending the expansion’s timeline beyond our expectations.
He emphasized a preference for fixed release dates over unpredictable class additions. I’m eager to include a new class in the next expansion, but I won’t commit to it if it risks derailing our schedule,
he added.
Reflecting on the Dawn of the Hunt expansion, Rogers noted that class development’s unpredictability means players shouldn’t expect new classes with every patch. He stressed the importance of delivering updates promptly to maintain player engagement.

Players want consistent progress and don’t want to wait six to nine months for major updates,
Rogers said. Classes are less predictable, so we’re focusing on timely content delivery instead.
Despite this shift, Rogers assured players that new Ascendancies will be included in every upcoming patch. He also expressed enthusiasm for adding more classes post-Early Access. We’ll definitely deliver Ascendancies, and I’m keen to keep adding classes even after the full release,
he confirmed.
Dawn of the Hunt Update to Overhaul Path of Exile 2 Endgame
Tougher Bosses and Slower Power Progression

Alongside the Huntress, the upcoming patch introduces over 100 new skills, support gems, and unique gear tailored for midgame and endgame. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) is also making bosses significantly more challenging. Rogers explained that the goal is to extend the time it takes for characters to dominate the endgame while ensuring players can still achieve that power level eventually.
Some mechanics are being trivialized too easily, so certain elements will need adjustments,
Rogers said. Players are reaching peak power too quickly, and we want that milestone to come later in the journey.

Rogers expressed disappointment at how swiftly players defeated Pinnacle Bosses, citing an instance where a boss was downed in just 14 seconds due to an overpowered build. He envisions a tougher initial encounter with Pinnacle Bosses, where the first fight is a significant challenge.
The first Pinnacle Boss fight should be intense and demanding. With time, optimized builds and gear can lead to faster kills, but that shouldn’t happen right away,
Rogers explained.
He noted that balance changes aim to slow the power progression curve. We want players to feel powerful, but not immediately. Our adjustments focus on pacing that climb to power,
Rogers concluded.
Path of Exile 2 Director Satisfied with Ruthless Difficulty
Skill, Not Balance Changes, Drives Easier Gameplay

The campaign difficulty in Path of Exile 2 has sparked debate, with some players finding it too easy and others too hard. Rogers expressed confidence in the current difficulty, suggesting that player perceptions will shift as they gain experience. He noted that many complaints came from veterans comparing the new game to its predecessor without fully engaging with the current version.
I’m optimistic we’ll see fewer difficulty complaints this time. Once players master the game, it feels much easier,
Rogers said. He added that if issues persist, the team would use feedback to make targeted adjustments but remains confident in the current balance.
Players often think we’ve tweaked the balance when they replay the game, but in reality, they’ve just improved their skills,
Rogers observed.
