PoE2 Endgame: Devs Address Difficulty Concerns

Feb 23,25

Path of Exile 2's challenging endgame has sparked debate among players, prompting a response from co-directors Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers. While acknowledging player concerns, the developers defended the current difficulty, emphasizing the importance of meaningful consequences for death. Rogers stated that frequent deaths indicate a player isn't yet prepared for the endgame's escalating challenges.

The game, launched in early access in December 2024, features a revamped skill system and 100 challenging endgame maps accessible after completing the six-act story. The recent 0.1.0 patch addressed bugs and performance issues, particularly on PlayStation 5. Upcoming Patch 0.1.1 is also in the works.

In an interview, Roberts and Rogers highlighted that the endgame's design, including the potential for significant experience loss, is intentional. They believe altering core elements, such as reverting to a single-portal system, would fundamentally change the game's feel. While acknowledging the difficulty, they're evaluating specific aspects of the endgame's design to ensure an authentic and engaging experience. Grinding Gear Games is carefully considering which elements contribute most to the core gameplay loop.

The endgame unfolds within the complex Atlas of Worlds. Players progress by conquering maps and defeating powerful bosses. This demanding content, accessible after completing the main campaign on Cruel difficulty, requires optimized builds, strategic gameplay, and a high level of skill. Despite numerous guides offering advanced strategies, the endgame's difficulty remains a significant hurdle for many players.
