Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Move for the Esports World Cup 2025

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 is making headlines with a surprising addition to its lineup: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of modern esports, marking a significant moment in gaming history.

Chess Officially Crowned an Esport

A landmark partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) brings competitive chess to the world's largest gaming festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the timeless strategy game to a broader, more mainstream audience.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, calling chess "the mother of all strategy games." He emphasized chess's global appeal and thriving competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a new generation of fans. He highlighted the opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future players.

The EWC 2025, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 31st to August 3rd, boasts a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess competition.

To enhance the esports appeal, the CCT will feature a faster 10-minute time control per game, replacing the traditional 90-minute format. Tiebreakers will utilize a single Armageddon game.

Chess, with roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, has evolved significantly. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, and the rise of online streaming and media coverage (including shows like "The Queen's Gambit"), have broadened its reach. Its official recognition as an esport promises to further accelerate its growth and attract a new wave of players and fans.
