As the Bloodborne PSX Demake Becomes the Latest Fan-Project to Suffer a Copyright Claim, the Creator of Bloodborne's 60fps Mod Has Offered His ‘Copium’ Official Remake Theory
The Bloodborne PSX demake, a recent fan project, has become the latest victim of a copyright claim, following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Lance McDonald, the well-known creator of the 60fps mod, announced a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, requiring the removal of online links to his patch—four years after its release. Lilith Walther, creator of the Bloodborne PSX demake and Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart), reported a YouTube video of her demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement. McDonald revealed MarkScan is a company employed by Sony, the same company behind the DMCA of his 60fps patch, adding that they also targeted an older video showcasing the Bloodborne PSX demake.
Bloodborne's continued absence from the next-gen landscape is a major point of contention among fans. While the PS4 original garnered critical acclaim, Sony has remained silent on any potential next-gen upgrade, remaster, or sequel. Recently, PS4 emulators, particularly ShadPS4 as highlighted by Digital Foundry, achieved a significant breakthrough, enabling a near-remaster experience with 60fps gameplay on PC. This development prompted speculation regarding Sony's aggressive DMCA actions. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment but hasn't received a response.
McDonald proposed a "copium theory"—that Sony's DMCA actions preempt an official 60fps remake announcement, preventing search engine collisions between fan projects and official releases, potentially to secure trademarks for "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake."
Despite Sony's actions, there's been no official indication of future Bloodborne plans. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his theory in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to Bloodborne and his busy schedule prevent him from authorizing any updates, and that PlayStation respects his wishes.
Bloodborne remains dormant nearly a decade after its release. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about Bloodborne, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he acknowledged in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on modern hardware.
