Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster
NIS America Accelerates Western Releases of Trails and Ys Series
Good news for fans of Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys JRPG franchises! NIS America has pledged to significantly reduce the time it takes to bring these titles to Western audiences. This commitment to faster localization was announced by Senior Associate Producer Alan Costa during the recent Ys X: Nordics digital showcase.
While Costa remained tight-lipped about the specific internal changes implemented, he emphasized the company's dedication to quicker turnaround times. He cited the upcoming releases of Ys X: Nordics (this October) and Trails Through Daybreak II (early 2025) as examples of this accelerated process. Even the 2025 release of Trails Through Daybreak II, originally released in Japan in September 2022, represents a substantial improvement over previous localization timelines.
Historically, Western fans have endured lengthy waits for these games. The infamous example of Trails in the Sky, released in Japan in 2004 but not reaching Western audiences until 2011, highlights the past challenges. The sheer volume of text in these games, as explained by former XSEED Games Localization Manager Jessica Chavez, has always presented a significant hurdle.
Despite aiming for faster releases, NIS America assures fans that quality remains paramount. Costa stressed the importance of finding a balance between speed and accuracy, a balance they've been actively refining. The process still requires two to three years, but the noticeable reduction in wait times is a positive development.
The past delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the potential risks of rushing the localization process. However, the recent, well-received release of Trails Through Daybreak suggests NIS America is successfully navigating this challenge, delivering high-quality localizations more efficiently. This positive trend bodes well for future releases.
