Following the successful launch of Avowed, both Microsoft and Obsidian are thrilled with the game's sales performance. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel shared her vision for the franchise's future. While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed a keen interest in exploring further expansions and a sequel. She remarked, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The development of Avowed was a journey filled with challenges and transformations. Patel described the process as "messy," yet ultimately rewarding. Initially conceived in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated the complexities of being an independent studio before its acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. The game underwent significant changes, including the removal of multiplayer features and a leadership team overhaul in January 2021.

Under Patel's direction, the focus shifted to enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series, moving away from an open world to more manageable open zones. Reflecting on the experience, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed revitalizing interest in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is eyeing a new venture: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, shared the studio's enthusiasm for developing a tactics game within the franchise. Sawyer explained, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games."

However, he acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size and visual quality. While interest in creating a tactics game has been reported among developers, the renewed focus on the franchise due to Avowed's success could pave the way for this idea to become a reality.

Despite his interest in Pillars of Eternity Tactics, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for Pillars of Eternity 3, aspiring to achieve a budget similar to the $100 million spent on Baldur’s Gate 3, a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
