CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive and believable world.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba outlined their innovative approach: “Our guiding principle is that every NPC should feel like they have their own life and story.”

This commitment is evident in the debut trailer, showcasing the secluded village of Stromford. Villagers adhere to unique superstitions, worshipping a forest deity. A poignant scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.

Kalemba emphasized the pursuit of realism: “We're striving for the most realistic NPCs possible—from their appearance and facial expressions to their behavior. This will significantly enhance immersion. We're aiming for unparalleled quality.”

Developers plan to imbue each village and character with distinctive traits and narratives, reflecting the folklore and cultural nuances of isolated communities.

The Witcher 4's 2025 release date has fans eagerly anticipating further details on this revolutionary approach to world and character building.
