Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, sparking excitement with the tease of its debut game. In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was initially formed within Bungie, the creators of Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently focused on an ambitious project that Hulst is particularly enthusiastic about.

The name teamLFG is derived from 'Looking For Group,' a common phrase in online gaming communities, suggesting a strong emphasis on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic, mythic science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster a sense of community and belonging among players.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. They envision a gaming experience where players log in to find their teammates already socializing online, creating memorable moments and building lasting relationships. The studio is committed to developing immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, emphasizing learning, playing, and mastering the game.

"We want to build our games with our communities, inviting players to be a part of our development process through early access playtests," they added. This approach underscores their commitment to being responsive to player feedback, not only during the development phase but also throughout the game's live service, ensuring continuous growth and engagement.

View 100 ImagesteamLFG's project emerged from Bungie amid significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets, particularly with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, and another 220 in 2024, which was 17% of the studio's workforce. During this period, 155 employees were reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project that became teamLFG was announced.

In late 2023, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in pushing for improvements to Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company. Since then, Bungie has fully unveiled their extraction shooter, Marathon, and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. Notably, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
