Rare's Everwild, first announced at Microsoft's X019 event, has been shrouded in mystery and speculation due to its prolonged development and absence from recent Xbox showcases. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has reassured fans that the project is still very much alive. In a recent interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for Everwild, mentioning a visit to Rare's UK studio where he saw the progress being made on the game.

Spencer highlighted the importance of giving development teams the time they need, citing Everwild alongside other upcoming titles like State of Decay and the next game from Double Fine. This approach is supported by Microsoft's robust release schedule, bolstered by the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Spencer's upcoming visit to The Coalition, developers of the Gears of War series, further underscores Microsoft's commitment to nurturing its game development teams.

Everwild has faced its share of challenges, including rumors of a reboot, which Microsoft has denied, and the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020. The project has since been led by veteran designer Gregg Mayles, known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves.

Originally described as a third-person adventure game with god game elements, the exact nature of Everwild may have evolved during its extended development. The last trailer, released in July 2020, promised "a unique and unforgettable experience" in a "natural and magical world."

Amidst a crowded lineup of upcoming Microsoft titles, including the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo, Playground's new Fable game, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls 6, Activision's latest Call of Duty, and id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages set to launch in May, Everwild continues to be a highly anticipated project.
