Palworld Live Service Model May Be PocketPair's Best Option
Palworld CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about the game's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning to a live service model. The interview revealed a careful consideration of various options for Palworld's continued development.
Pocketpair CEO Discusses Palworld's Future: Live Service or Not?
A Profitable, Yet Challenging Path
Mizobe confirmed that while future updates are planned (including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses), the long-term direction for Palworld remains undecided. The primary options are a complete, buy-to-play (B2P) release, or a shift to a live service model (LiveOps). A B2P model offers the complete game for a one-time purchase, while a live service model utilizes ongoing monetization through continuous content releases.
Mizobe acknowledged the financial benefits of a live service model, stating it would increase profitability and extend the game's lifespan. However, he also highlighted the challenges. Palworld wasn't initially designed for this model, making the transition complex.
Crucially, player preference is a major factor. Mizobe noted the typical live service model implementation involves starting as free-to-play (F2P) and then adding paid content. Palworld's B2P structure makes this a significant hurdle. While successful F2P transitions exist (like PUBG and Fall Guys), Mizobe emphasized the considerable time and effort involved in such a shift.
The interview also touched on other monetization strategies. While ad monetization was suggested, Mizobe pointed out its limited applicability to PC games, particularly on platforms like Steam, where players generally react negatively to ads.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement while maintaining the satisfaction of its existing player base. The future direction of Palworld, currently in early access and recently updated with the Sakurajima update and PvP arena, remains under careful consideration. The decision will hinge on balancing financial opportunity with player satisfaction and the practical complexities of a significant game model overhaul.
