Nightingale is \"Too Open World\" According to Ex-Mass Effect Devs
Inflexion Games, the studio helmed by former BioWare leaders, is poised to significantly revamp their open-world crafting survival game, Nightingale. This article delves into the upcoming changes and the developers' perspectives on the game's current state.
Former Mass Effect Developers Address Nightingale's Shortcomings
Summer Update Promises Major Overhaul
In a recent YouTube video, Inflexion Games' Aaryn Flynn and Neil Thomson acknowledged player feedback and expressed dissatisfaction with Nightingale's performance since its February early access launch. They cited low player numbers and overall negative sentiment as key areas needing improvement. A substantial update, slated for the end of summer, aims to address these concerns. The developers have already implemented quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes, including a highly requested offline mode. However, the upcoming update targets more fundamental issues. According to Thomson, the game's open-world design is currently its biggest hurdle: "It's almost too open world, too self-motivated in terms of goal-setting."
Nightingale tasks players with exploring the perilous Fae Realms. While the open-world format usually provides extensive content, the team believes the lack of structure hinders player engagement. The update will introduce clearer progression systems, defined objectives, and redesigned realms to combat the perceived repetitiveness.
Flynn emphasized the team's commitment to improving the game's core mechanics and player experience: "We want to bring more structure to the overall experience...a better understanding of what you can do, a better understanding of the differences between these Realms." The update will also increase build limits, allowing for more ambitious player creations. Teasers of this new content are expected in the coming weeks.
Despite currently holding "Mixed" reviews on Steam, Nightingale is seeing a rise in positive feedback, with approximately 68% of recent reviews being positive. Flynn and Thomson expressed appreciation for the community's support and ongoing feedback. Flynn concluded by stating that while more work remains, the team believes the upcoming update significantly enhances the game.
