Buggy Releases Draw Criticism from Discerning Gamers
Paradox Interactive Shifts Strategy After Game Setbacks
Following the cancellation of Life By You and the troubled launch of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive has outlined its revised approach to game development and release. The company acknowledges shifting player expectations and a decreased tolerance for buggy releases.
Paradox's Revised Approach
Paradox CEO Mattias Lilja and CCO Henrik Fahraeus discussed player sentiment with Rock Paper Shotgun. Lilja highlighted increased player expectations and a reduced willingness to accept post-launch bug fixes. The Cities: Skylines 2 launch served as a crucial learning experience, emphasizing the need for more rigorous pre-release quality assurance. Fahraeus stressed the importance of expanded pre-release player testing to gather valuable feedback.
Delayed and Cancelled Projects
The delay of Prison Architect 2 stems from technical challenges, not fundamental design flaws. Lilja clarified that while gameplay is strong, technical hurdles proved more difficult to overcome than anticipated, impacting the desired release quality. The cancellation of Life By You resulted from unmet development goals and an inability to maintain the desired development pace. Lilja admitted a lack of complete understanding of certain challenges contributed to the cancellation.
The Competitive Landscape
Lilja noted the increasingly competitive gaming market, where players are quicker to abandon games, especially with budget constraints. This trend, observed over the past two years, underscores the need for higher quality releases. The negative reception to Cities: Skylines 2 prompted a joint apology and a planned "fan feedback summit." The game's first DLC was also delayed due to performance issues. The Life By You cancellation reflects the company's commitment to delivering high-quality experiences that meet both internal and player expectations.
