Bloodborne Patch Creator Targeted by Sony DMCA

The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a well-known video game modder, announced on Twitter that Sony Interactive Entertainment requested the removal of links to his patch, which he subsequently complied with.

McDonald referenced a past encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he jokingly revealed his creation of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Yoshida's reaction was reportedly one of amusement.

Bloodborne's continued absence of an official next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel remains a significant point of contention among fans. The game's 30fps performance on PS4 has fueled ongoing demand for a 60fps upgrade. While McDonald's mod filled this gap, recent advancements in PS4 emulation, specifically ShadPS4, have enabled near-remaster quality 60fps gameplay on PC, as highlighted by Digital Foundry. This development may have prompted Sony's more assertive action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Earlier this month, Yoshida offered a personal theory regarding Bloodborne's lack of updates in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He speculated that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, deeply cherishes Bloodborne and is hesitant to allow others to work on it, despite its popularity and potential for remastering. Yoshida suggested that PlayStation respects Miyazaki's wishes.

Despite Miyazaki often deflecting questions about Bloodborne due to FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on more modern hardware would be beneficial. Bloodborne remains largely untouched almost a decade after its initial release, leaving its future uncertain.
