If you're a fan of survival games, you've likely heard of Atomfall, developed by Rebellion—a studio that knows how to craft compelling experiences. According to Rebellion, Atomfall became "immediately profitable" upon release, even though a significant portion of its 2 million players were Xbox Game Pass subscribers who didn’t purchase the game outright.

While exact sales figures remain undisclosed, Rebellion confirmed that Atomfall marked their largest launch yet in terms of player numbers. This impressive debut was partly fueled by Game Pass subscribers dipping their toes into the game. Despite this, Rebellion reported that Atomfall quickly recouped its development costs, showcasing its commercial success.

With its post-apocalyptic setting in northern England, Atomfall has already sparked discussions about potential sequels or spin-offs. As the game continues to receive post-launch support and DLC updates, Rebellion remains focused on expanding the universe and enhancing player engagement.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley praised the partnership with Xbox Game Pass, stating it mitigated risks associated with cannibalizing sales. By leveraging Microsoft’s subscription model, Rebellion ensured broad exposure and positive word-of-mouth marketing. Kingsley noted that while some players tried the game through Game Pass, others outside the service were inspired to purchase it after hearing rave reviews.

Although Microsoft keeps financial details under wraps, the impact of Atomfall on both parties is undeniable. With over 34 million Game Pass subscribers as of early 2024, the game’s reach and popularity have undoubtedly benefited both Rebellion and Microsoft.

IGN described Atomfall as "a gripping survival-action adventure that blends elements from Fallout and Elden Ring into its own unique experience." Its success underscores the value of strategic partnerships in today’s gaming landscape, proving that innovative titles can thrive regardless of distribution channels.
