Sony Patents Hint at PS5 Controller Transforming into Gun, Predicting Moves
Sony has recently unveiled two intriguing patents that promise to revolutionize the gaming experience on the PlayStation 5. These patents focus on enhancing gameplay through AI technology and a new accessory for the DualSense controller. Let's dive into the details of these innovations.
Two New Patents For Sony
AI That Predicts Your Movement To Reduce Lag
Sony's latest patent, titled "Timed Input/Action Release," introduces an AI-powered camera system designed to predict a player's next moves. This system involves a camera that captures footage of the player and their controller. The footage is then analyzed by a machine learning model, which aims to anticipate the player's upcoming button presses. Alternatively, the system allows for "incomplete controller actions," where the AI guesses the player's intentions based on partial inputs.
The primary goal of this technology is to minimize lag in online gaming, a common challenge that can detract from the gaming experience. By predicting player inputs, the AI can help the system process actions more efficiently, thus reducing latency.
A Trigger For The DualSense Controller For Realistic Gunfights
Another notable patent is for a trigger attachment designed to enhance the realism of gunplay in first-person shooter (FPS) games and action-adventure RPGs. This accessory attaches to the DualSense controller, allowing players to hold it sideways like a gun, with the right arm serving as the stock. The space between the R1 and R2 buttons acts as the gun's sight, and pulling the trigger simulates firing a real firearm.
The patent also suggests that this attachment could be compatible with other devices, such as the PSVR2 headset, expanding its potential uses.
Sony has a rich history of innovation, with 78% of its 95,533 patents currently active. These include ideas like adaptive difficulty based on player skill, a DualSense variant that charges earbuds, and a controller that changes temperature in real-time to match in-game events. While patents are promising, it's important to note that not all patented ideas make it to market. We'll have to wait and see if these new concepts from Sony will become tangible products that gamers can enjoy.
