Scalebound Development: A Possible Revival?

May 19,25

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, blending dynamic combat, music, and a unique system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. As an Xbox One exclusive announced in 2014, it captured the imagination of gamers worldwide. However, despite the high anticipation, Microsoft officially halted its development in 2017, leaving fans disappointed.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues reviewing archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the project and took pride in its creation, despite its cancellation. Kamiya further amplified the buzz by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This plea hints at his ongoing interest in reviving the game, echoing his earlier statements from early 2022 about wanting to discuss the project's revival with Microsoft.

Speculation about Scalebound's return has been a recurring theme, with rumors intensifying in early 2023 about a potential reboot. Despite these whispers, Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. In an interview with Game Watch, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and a non-committal, "I have nothing to add at this time."

Even if Microsoft were to show interest in reviving Scalebound, fans shouldn't expect a swift return. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is immersed in developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox give the green light to Scalebound, Kamiya's involvement would be contingent on completing his current commitments. Nevertheless, the enduring interest in Scalebound after all these years offers hope that one day, players might finally experience this long-awaited game.
