Marathon Debunks Free-to-Play Claims, Summer Price Reveal Due

Marathon will not be offered as a free-to-play title, but rather as a premium game. Continue reading for details about Marathon's pricing structure and the developers' reasoning behind excluding proximity chat.
Marathon Development Updates
Marathon Confirmed as Premium Game

The Marathon Game Director has officially confirmed the title won't follow a free-to-play model. Bungie recently hosted a live gameplay showcase on April 13, revealing the release date alongside new gameplay footage. While pricing details remain undisclosed, anticipation grows regarding the game's monetization approach.
During an April 14 appearance on the Friends Per Second podcast, Game Director Joe Ziegler clarified: "We're creating an experience compelling enough for players to invest in, while guaranteeing ongoing seasonal content at no additional cost beyond the initial purchase."

Ziegler expressed confidence in the game's current state, noting: "The team is fully committed to delivering an exceptional experience. Pricing expectations will naturally vary among players."
While fans have speculated about potential price points on social media, Bungie clarified via Twitter on April 13 that Marathon will be a premium title (though not full-priced), with complete pricing details to follow this summer.
Proximity Chat Excluded from Marathon

While proximity chat has become common in modern multiplayer games, Bungie has chosen to exclude this feature from Marathon. This decision stems from concerns about managing toxic behavior that often accompanies such communication systems.
In a PC Gamer interview, Ziegler explained: "Our priority is maintaining a safe gaming environment. Currently, we haven't found a solution that effectively mitigates the negative aspects of proximity chat while preserving positive interactions."

The director noted that while the team isn't fundamentally opposed to the concept, technical and social challenges remain unsolved. "Many studios are grappling with this same issue. Should an effective solution emerge, we'd certainly reconsider implementing it," Ziegler added.
Marathon is scheduled for release on September 23, 2025 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Stay tuned for further updates about this highly anticipated title.
