Hyper Light Breaker's cryptic nature enhances its mystique, leaving players to unravel its mechanics organically. One crucial, yet often misunderstood, aspect is the lock-on targeting system. While locking onto a target provides focused combat, it's not a universally beneficial strategy. This guide clarifies how to use the lock-on feature and advises when to utilize it versus relying on the default free camera.

How To Target Enemies In Hyper Light Breaker

To target an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will usually identify the correct target unless it's surrounded by others. Your view will zoom slightly, and a reticle will appear around your target.

Line of sight isn't required for lock-on. As long as the enemy is visible onscreen and within targeting range, you can lock on.

Locking on alters your character's movement while the camera tracks your target. The camera's focus on your target means your movements will tend to circle them. Fast-moving enemies can cause rapid camera shifts, potentially altering your directional inputs mid-movement.

To switch targets while locked on, simply move the right analog stick left or right. The reticle will jump to the nearest enemy within range.

Pressing the right analog stick again cancels the lock-on, returning to the default third-person camera. This can also be changed in the settings menu. The lock-on will also automatically disengage if you move too far from your target.

When Should I Lock On vs Use Free Cam?

Lock-on is advantageous in specific situations but can be risky in others. It's ideal for one-on-one encounters, such as boss fights or against strong (yellow health bar) enemies—but only after eliminating other mobs.

The camera's exclusive focus on one target leaves you vulnerable to attacks from enemies outside your immediate view. Managing groups becomes significantly more challenging.

Free camera mode is generally more useful. When facing multiple enemies or easily dispatched weaker foes, lock-on offers no real advantage and can hinder your ability to react to surrounding threats.

Against mini-bosses or bosses, after clearing other enemies, lock-on keeps the boss centered. However, cancel the lock-on if other enemies appear, then re-engage it once the boss is isolated.

For example, during Extractions, you'll face waves of regular enemies followed by a mini-boss. The mini-boss might spawn while other enemies are still present. In this scenario, maintain free camera until all regular enemies are defeated, then lock onto the mini-boss for focused combat.
