Respawn Has Quietly Canceled a Multiplayer FPS Incubation Project

May 02,25

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an undisclosed number of employees involved. The news was initially brought to light by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who shared that they were part of the project for the past year before its cancellation, and are now seeking new opportunities in the gaming industry.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced project, which was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This project was developed by a team that previously worked on another canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains unconfirmed, a source familiar with the situation described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This cancellation is part of a broader trend of project terminations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. The trend started with the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the closure of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS mentioned earlier. As a result of these cuts, around two dozen Respawn employees were affected. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional key staff members laid off.

IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for further comment on these developments.
