Ratchet and Clank 2nd Movie Considered by Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Film Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has signaled its interest in further expanding its game-to-screen adaptations. This follows the recent retirement of founder and CEO Ted Price and was revealed in an interview with Variety.
Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider expressed enthusiasm for future film projects, referencing the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie. While the film received mixed reviews, Insomniac’s confidence stems from Sony’s recent successes in game adaptations, notably the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series. The acquisition of Insomniac by Sony in 2019 further bolsters this confidence.
Schneider stated, "I think back to the Ratchet and Clank film from several years ago. And we kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular." This suggests a potential sequel or further exploration of the franchise on the big screen.
Sony's Expanding Game Adaptation Portfolio
Sony's track record in adapting its game properties speaks volumes. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further bolstering this commitment, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled additional projects:
- The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025)
- Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025)
- Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027)
- Helldivers feature film (release date unannounced)
- Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film (release date unannounced)
This robust pipeline demonstrates Sony's dedication to translating its successful game franchises to other media.
Insomniac's Leadership Transition
Ted Price's retirement after 30 years marks a significant shift for Insomniac Games. Price, instrumental in building the studio behind franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man, expressed his decision as a natural progression after three decades at the helm.
The reins are now held by three veteran Insomniac employees: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as Co-Studio Heads. Price emphasized the importance of internal leadership, stating, "I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust." This transition suggests a smooth continuation of Insomniac's legacy and potentially a new era of innovation in both gaming and film.
