Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options

Phantom Blade Zero Playtime Estimated to be 20-30 Hours with Adjustable Difficulty

Phantom Blade Zero distinguishes itself from the Soulslike genre by offering four difficulty levels: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. This decision comes in response to fan comparisons made after the game's reveal at the PlayStation Showcase 2023, which highlighted its combat and aesthetics. Game Director Soulframe emphasized in a tweet post-Summer Game Fest 2024 that Phantom Blade Zero was never intended to be another Soulslike. Instead, the focus is on delivering "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

While the game draws inspiration from Soulslike games with its multi-layered maps, multiple approach paths, and hidden areas, Soulframe clarified that "the similarities stop there." He described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.

Gameplay Features With Over 30+ Weapons, 20-30 Hours of Playthrough, And More

Recent interviews have shed light on Phantom Blade Zero's extensive gameplay features. Players can choose from over 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each offering unique effects and combat styles. The main story is expected to take 20-30 hours to complete, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content available for players to explore.

Boss fights are designed with at least two phases, allowing players who die during the second phase to restart from there without repeating the first. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," enables players to challenge previously defeated bosses and unlock hidden ones. Additionally, a mechanic that influences the game's ending has been introduced, though details on how it affects the narrative and the number of alternate endings remain undisclosed.
