Game Director Soulframe emphasized in a tweet post-Summer Game Fest 2024 that Phantom Blade Zero was never intended to be another Soulslike. Instead, the focus is on delivering "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

While the game draws inspiration from Soulslike games with its multi-layered maps, multiple approach paths, and hidden areas, Soulframe clarified that "the similarities stop there." He described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.

Boss fights are designed with at least two phases, allowing players who die during the second phase to restart from there without repeating the first.
