Ex-Diablo devs are working on a new ARPG to innovate the genre

Former developers of Diablo and Diablo II are creating a new, low-budget action RPG with ambitious goals. Given the success of the original Diablo games, this new ARPG, developed by individuals instrumental in those titles, has significant potential.

Phil Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer founded Moon Beast Productions, an independent studio, securing $4.5 million in funding to develop an ARPG that aims to "push beyond the genre's established design patterns." This team of Diablo I and II veterans intends to reinvent the hack-and-slash genre, striving to create a more open and dynamic ARPG, a vision they've held for over two decades. Their stated goal is to recapture the essence of the early Diablo games.

Details about the game remain scarce, but the involvement of such experienced developers suggests a high likelihood of creating a top-tier action RPG. However, success won't be guaranteed. The market is already saturated with high-quality ARPGs. Diablo IV's recent Vessel of Hatred expansion, for example, was extremely successful, boasting a dedicated fanbase that might be reluctant to switch games.

Competition is fierce, particularly from established giants like Path of Exile 2. The recent launch of Path of Exile 2 was a resounding success on Steam, achieving a peak player count exceeding 538,000, placing it among the platform's top 15 most-played games. This highlights the significant challenge Moon Beast Productions faces in breaking into this competitive landscape.
