Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 3 Million Players, Ubisoft Silent on Sales
Since its launch on May 20, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has captivated over 3 million players in just seven days, marking a significant milestone for Ubisoft. This impressive number builds on the 2 million players reported just two days after the game's release, surpassing the launch figures of both Origins and Odyssey. Ubisoft has shared additional statistics, previously highlighted by IGN’s coverage of an internal email, which positioned Shadows' opening weekend performance as stronger than that of Origins and Odyssey, but not quite reaching the "perfect storm" that propelled Valhalla in 2020.
Shadows achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the Assassin's Creed franchise, only trailing behind Valhalla. It also set a record for Ubisoft with the highest day one sales on the PlayStation Store. To date, players have logged over 40 million hours in the game.
The performance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is under intense scrutiny globally, especially given Ubisoft's recent challenges including delays, the commercial disappointment of Star Wars Outlaws, and other setbacks such as high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. Amidst these struggles, Ubisoft's founding Guillemot family was reportedly in discussions with investors like Tencent about a potential buyout that would keep control of the company's intellectual property intact. The gaming community is closely watching Shadows’ early performance to gauge its success or failure.
On Steam, Assassin’s Creed Shadows set a new record for the series, reaching a peak of 64,825 concurrent players over the weekend. This makes it the most-played Assassin's Creed game on Steam to date, although it's notable as the first title in the series to launch day-one on the platform since 2018's Odyssey. For comparison, BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard peaked at 89,418 players on the same platform.

It's challenging to determine whether Assassin’s Creed Shadows is meeting, exceeding, or falling short of Ubisoft's expectations without specific revenue or sales figures. Ultimately, the financial performance of the game will be a critical indicator of its success and the future of Ubisoft. We might have to wait for Ubisoft's upcoming financial report to get a clearer picture.
