Marvel Rivals' Success Doesn't Stop NetEase From Firing Director and Other US Devs
NetEase Games' recent layoff of US-based developers working on the successful Marvel Rivals has sent shockwaves through the industry. Despite the game's positive reception, the company has let go of key personnel, including the game director. This article delves into the story and previews the upcoming Season 1 update.
NetEase's Strategic Shift Impacts North American Studios
Marvel Rivals US Devs Laid Off by NetEase
Thaddeus Sasser, director of Marvel Rivals, announced on LinkedIn on February 19, 2025, that he and other California-based developers were laid off by NetEase Games. In a poignant post, Sasser highlighted the team's success in launching a new franchise, only to face unexpected job losses. He expressed his surprise at the industry's volatility, stating, "This is such a weird industry...My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games...and were just laid off!"
Despite the setback, Sasser is actively seeking new opportunities for his former colleagues, using his LinkedIn platform to champion their skills and experience. He's already begun highlighting individual team members, such as Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, praising his skills and recommending him for new roles.
NetEase's Controversial North American Moves
Marvel Rivals was developed by teams in China and Seattle. While Sasser's team played a crucial role in game and level design, their contributions didn't shield them from the recent industry-wide layoffs. NetEase has offered no official explanation for the layoffs, but reports suggest a potential strategic withdrawal from the North American market. This is further supported by previous actions, including the withdrawal of funding from Worlds Untold studio in November 2024 and the termination of the partnership with Jar of Sparks in January 2025.
