Mario Kart World Launches on Switch

The producer of Mario Kart World has confirmed the game was initially designed for the original Nintendo Switch. Discover the fascinating evolution of this title and the adjustments required for its transition to the Switch 2 platform.
Behind the Scenes of Mario Kart World
Development Origins in 2017

Mario Kart World marks the newest chapter in Nintendo's beloved racing series, launching simultaneously with the Switch 2. Surprisingly, development traces back to 2017 during work on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In Nintendo's recent Ask the Developer interview (May 21), the creative team shared intriguing details about the game's conception. Producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed prototyping began March 2017, with full production commencing later that year. Building upon Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's success, the team aspired to create a more ambitious project.
Yabuki also explained the decision to break from numerical sequels: "We aimed beyond simply adding courses or incremental improvements. Early concept art already featured 'MARIO KART WORLD' - signaling our vision for a fresh start."
Transitioning to Switch 2

Programming Director Kenta Sato recalled discussions about Switch 2 starting in 2020. While developers anticipated the next-gen console's capabilities, actual hardware details remained uncertain initially. "We progressed based on projections until receiving development units," Sato explained.
The team faced technical balancing challenges: "While Switch handles diverse games well, implementing our expansive vision risked compromising performance. Maintaining 60fps proved particularly demanding."
Switch 2's confirmed specifications eliminated these concerns. Sato expressed relief: "Discovering we could exceed original expectations was exhilarating." The upgrade enabled significant graphical improvements. Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa noted enhanced freedom for environmental details like richer vegetation and textures.
Cow Joins the Roster

Series enthusiasts cheered when trailers revealed Cow as a playable character - previously limited to background elements or obstacles.
Ishikawa shared the amusing origin: "A designer's playful sketch of Cow racing instantly clicked. NPCs suddenly became potential roster additions." The successful integration of Cow sparked ideas for future unconventional characters.

The team meticulously crafted the interconnected world across various elements - from diverse culinary themes to terrain-specific kart modifications and dynamic track designs.
Anticipation builds as Nintendo prepares this flagship franchise for Switch 2's launch. Mario Kart World races onto consoles June 5, 2025 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Stay tuned for further updates.
