The surprise release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22 created an internet sensation, but indie developers who had scheduled their own game launches for the same day found themselves struggling for visibility.

Jonas Antonsson, co-founder of indie publisher Raw Fury, expressed on social media how major shadow-drops from blockbuster titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered can "bury" all other releases vying for attention at the same time.

"I've always adored Oblivion—both in my younger years and now—and I'm genuinely thrilled to see it revitalized for a new generation of players," Antonsson stated.

"However, from an indie developer or publisher’s perspective, this is the challenge with such massive surprise launches. Everything else tends to get overshadowed. Without the financial resources or marketing power of large studios, we carefully plan every move, including launch dates, to maximize our chances of being noticed."

Antonsson highlighted Post Trauma by Red Soul Games, published by Raw Fury on April 22. This horror-puzzle title draws inspiration from PS2-era classics, challenging players to "explore eerie environments, confront dangers, and encounter fellow lost souls within the haunting depths of the Gloom."

"While I admire the newly released title, I share the disappointment felt by our team and especially the dedicated developer who poured his heart into this project over many years," Antonsson remarked.

On April 22, Raw Fury posted a tongue-in-cheek tweet: "What a relief that Post Trauma was the only notable release today and absolutely nothing else happened!"

From the perspective of Bethesda and its parent company Microsoft, the shadow-drop of Oblivion Remastered has been a resounding success. The game got off to a strong start on Steam and has dominated online conversations as fans relish the return of quirky character designs, original bugs, and nostalgic memes.

Even other titles that Microsoft has heavily promoted are facing competition from Oblivion Remastered. This week, Kepler Interactive, publisher of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, acknowledged the 'Barbenheimer'-style timing clash of releasing the same week as the remaster. Both games launched directly into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

When Raw Fury scheduled Post Trauma's release date, it had no way of anticipating that Oblivion Remastered would steal the spotlight. It may simply go down as an unfortunate twist of fate.
