Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Fuels Switch 2 Remake Speculation
Fresh buzz surrounds the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake as Square Enix unveils a dedicated 25th Anniversary website for the beloved game.
The Japanese-language site highlights Final Fantasy 9’s original release on July 7, 2000, marking its 25th anniversary this year.
“We’re working on exciting initiatives, including merchandise and partnerships, to celebrate this milestone. Stay tuned!” the site reads.
This subtle nod, paired with the website’s launch, has ignited speculation that Square Enix might soon unveil the eagerly awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake.
The timing aligns with Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2, prompting fans to wonder if Square Enix will announce the remake for the new console.
Still, this could be wishful thinking. The site mentions merchandise and collaborations, but the vague “various projects” phrase has sparked widespread curiosity.
Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida discussed the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9, noting its vast scope.
“Final Fantasy 9 has an immense amount of content,” Yoshi-P remarked. “Remaking it as a single game is a complex challenge.”
Yoshi-P hinted that a Final Fantasy 9 remake might follow the multi-part approach of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
In 2024, Yoshi-P revealed Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrail expansion, including an Ark summon mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion. Pre-ordering Dawntrail granted a wind-up Zidane minion, the game’s iconic protagonist.
During a PAX East panel, Yoshi-P teased: “You’ve likely spotted the Final Fantasy 9 references, but the reason behind them remains a mystery.” He then gestured to stay silent.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have persisted since a 2021 Nvidia leak listed unannounced titles, including several Square Enix projects like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC. While some listed games have since launched, Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. In June 2021, reports surfaced of a Final Fantasy 9 animated series in development, but no updates have followed.
