Zelda Film Delayed by Nintendo

Nintendo has officially announced a delay for its upcoming live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

In a social media post this afternoon, Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the team will use the "additional time" to further refine the film's overall quality.

The movie, originally scheduled for March 26, 2027, is now set to debut on May 7, 2027—a slot previously occupied by the also-delayed Avengers: Secret Wars.

The statement from Miyamoto reads: "This is Miyamoto. Due to production requirements, we are adjusting the release date for the live-action The Legend of Zelda film to May 7, 2027.

"While this means the film will arrive slightly later than initially planned, the extra development time will allow us to deliver the best possible experience. We appreciate your understanding."

Nintendo did not provide further details behind the scheduling shift, but by taking over the former Avengers: Secret Wars release window, the company secures a prime spot previously held by Marvel, while avoiding major competition around its original March date.

The previous release date for The Legend of Zelda placed it just one week after Sonic The Hedgehog 4, set for March 19, 2027, and would have pitted it directly against Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Avengers: Secret Wars has since been rescheduled for December 17, 2027.

With under two years remaining until the anticipated release, details about the Zelda movie remain scarce. No casting announcements have been made, and specific plot points are still under wraps.

First announced in November 2023, the film is being produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, former CEO of Marvel Studios. Sony Pictures Entertainment is co-financing the project alongside Nintendo and will handle worldwide distribution. The screenplay is penned by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World), with Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) serving as director.

In May 2024, Ball shared that creating a fully motion-capture Zelda film “may not be his preference” after his work on the CGI-heavy Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He expressed that The Legend of Zelda should instead feel "grounded" and "authentic."

Ball added in another interview: "I want to meet the high expectations that fans have for this beloved franchise. My goal is to create a compelling, cinematic experience—a film that feels real and immersive, yet still captures the magic and wonder of the world of Zelda."
