Nintendo Cautious on Switch 2 Sales Amid Tariff Uncertainty
Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding tariffs, Nintendo has issued what industry analysts are describing as a "conservative" sales forecast for the Switch 2.
In its latest financial report, Nintendo projected sales of 15 million Switch 2 units and 45 million game sales for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The new console is scheduled to launch on June 5.
Nintendo stated that its forecast assumes the U.S. tariff rates implemented on April 10 will remain in effect throughout the fiscal year. However, it acknowledged that potential adjustments to these tariffs could impact its projections. "We will continue monitoring the situation to adapt to changing market conditions," the company said.
Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, characterized the 15 million figure as "conservative." In a tweet, he noted that Nintendo appears to be "factoring in unpredictability around tariffs, pricing, and production, despite strong pre-order momentum."
Ahmad added that Nintendo might revise its forecast upward if the tariff situation improves. "However, the main challenge currently involves ripple effects already in motion, creating a difficult environment for a console launch. This is compounded by the threat of potential tariff increases."
It's worth noting that if the Switch 2 achieves 15 million sales in its first year, it would rank among the most successful console launches in history, surpassing the original Switch's first-year sales of 14.87 million units.
Demand for the Switch 2 appears to be exceptionally strong. Following a tariff-related delay, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened on April 24 with the console price remaining at $449.99 — and the response was as overwhelming as anticipated. Meanwhile, Nintendo has issued a notice to U.S. customers who placed pre-orders through the My Nintendo Store, cautioning that release date delivery cannot be guaranteed due to exceptionally high demand.
