Marvel Rivals Apologizes for Banning Non-Cheaters
Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw numerous non-Windows users—those playing on Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck via compatibility layers—incorrectly flagged as cheaters.
The mass banning, intended to target actual cheaters, inadvertently caught many legitimate players in its net. NetEase confirmed the error, stating that compatibility layer software, such as Proton on SteamOS (known for triggering anti-cheat systems), was the source of the misidentification. The bans have since been lifted, and NetEase offered sincere apologies for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report genuine cheating and provided avenues for appeal.
Separately, a community discussion has emerged regarding the game's character ban system. Currently, this feature—allowing players to remove specific characters from selection—is only available in Diamond rank and above. Many players, particularly those in lower ranks, express frustration at the lack of this mechanic in their respective tiers. They argue that character bans are crucial for balanced gameplay, strategic diversity, and overall enjoyment, especially for players facing overpowered characters. One Reddit user highlighted the disparity, noting the difficulty of competing against players with significant advantages when character bans aren't available.
The call for rank-inclusive character bans has gained traction within the community, with many believing it would enhance the game for players of all skill levels. While NetEase hasn't yet responded to this feedback, the ongoing discussion highlights a desire for improved balance and strategic depth across all ranks.
