Killzone Composer Reflects on Series' Future: 'Sense That People Want Something More Casual, Quick'
The beloved Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a prolonged hiatus, leaving fans yearning for its return. In a recent interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone's composer, Joris de Man, voiced his support for bringing the series back to life.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man stated. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The form in which Killzone could make a comeback remains open to interpretation. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more appealing to fans than a completely new installment.
"I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he remarked. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone games are known for their slower, more deliberate pace, contrasting sharply with fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, drew criticism for its perceived input lag, which affected its responsiveness on the PlayStation 3. The series is also renowned for its dark, gritty, and immersive atmosphere.
In a separate interview with the Washington Post, Guerrilla, the studio behind Killzone and now focused on the Horizon series, seemed to have moved on from the franchise. Despite this, it's been over a decade since Killzone Shadow Fall was released, and the prospect of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—continues to captivate some fans. While the future remains uncertain, supporters can take comfort in knowing they have allies like Joris de Man in their corner.
