James Gunn: No CG Used in Superman's Flying Face, TV Spot Clarified
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online buzz surrounding Superman's flying face after a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman film sparked discussions. Released over the weekend, the 30-second clip showcases two new scenes: Lex Luthor emerging from a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, likely in search of the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman executing a barrel roll as he flies over an icy landscape toward an undisclosed location.
The internet quickly took notice of Superman's facial expression, with some users pointing out that his face seemed unnaturally still despite his hair and cape fluttering in the wind. Speculation about "wonky CGI" arose, but Gunn set the record straight on Threads. Responding to a fan who praised the flying sequence but questioned the CGI, Gunn stated, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People's faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for the movie. This clarification confirms that David Corenswet's portrayal of Superman, complete with what appears to be a knowing smirk, is entirely natural, captured authentically with no digital manipulation of his face. While a fan might have been blowing air to simulate the wind effect, the shot remains unaltered.
Despite Gunn's explanation, fans continue to debate the visual impact of the shot, drawing comparisons to the flying Adam Warlock from Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Amidst this discussion, anticipation for the Superman movie remains high. Set to premiere on July 11, 2025, it marks the inaugural film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. IGN provides comprehensive coverage, including an explainer on all the DC Heroes and Villains in the new trailer, insights from James Gunn on Krypto being a troublesome dog in the film, reflections on how Superman embodies hope, and more.
