Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Shuts Down, Casting No More Spells

NetEase's collectible card role-playing game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is facing regional closure. The game's servers in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania will cease operations on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and select MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially launched in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2022, following a 2020 announcement and development by Zen Studio, the game enjoyed a strong initial launch in China but experienced a less successful global rollout.

The decision to end service stems from the game's underperformance. While initially praised for its Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and captivating Hogwarts atmosphere, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened failed to achieve sustained popularity. Player complaints on Reddit cite a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics, a reworked rewards system disadvantaging skilled free-to-play players, and significant nerfs impacting progression.

The game has already been removed from app stores in affected regions as of August 26th. Those in unaffected regions can still experience the game's dorm life, classes, secrets, and student duels.
