Unveiling the Nintendo Switch 2: Genki's CES Mockup Reveals Key Features

Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory developer, showcased a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, revealing intriguing details about Nintendo's next-generation console. The mockup, reportedly based on a black market acquisition, accurately reflects the Switch 2's dimensions, highlighting key design changes.

Genki's CEO, Eddie Tsai, confirmed several speculations in a subsequent interview with The Verge. The most striking feature is the adoption of magnetic Joy-Cons, featuring SL and SR buttons that detach via a pin mechanism. While utilizing magnets instead of sliding rails, the Joy-Cons maintain a secure grip during gameplay. Furthermore, the Joy-Con's mounting channels incorporate optical sensors, hinting at potential mouse-like functionality via a yet-to-be-released accessory. Leaked images appear to corroborate the presence of these sensors.

The Switch 2, while larger than its predecessor, maintains a slim profile, allowing it to physically fit within the existing Switch dock. However, structural differences render it incompatible for use. The purpose of a new "C" button and an additional USB-C port remain undisclosed.

The mockup demonstrated at CES offered a glimpse into the Switch 2's innovative design, confirming magnetic Joy-Cons and optical sensors, while leaving some features, such as the "C" button and extra USB-C port, shrouded in mystery. The console's compatibility with the existing dock remains a point of contention, despite its physical fit.
