Square Enix and Tencent Reportedly Making FFXIV Mobile Game

It's Mostly Unconfirmed Still

Niko Partners recently released a comprehensive report detailing a selection of games that have been approved for launch in China. Among the 15 titles greenlit by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for import and domestic release, a mobile version of Square Enix's iconic MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, stands out. This project is reportedly being developed by Tencent, the powerhouse in the mobile gaming industry.

In addition to Final Fantasy XIV, the approved lineup includes a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two games based on Marvel's intellectual property (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game inspired by Dynasty Warriors 8.

Rumors about Tencent's involvement in creating a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV began circulating last month, yet neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed these developments.

According to Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, who shared insights on Twitter (X) on August 3, the Final Fantasy XIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from its PC counterpart. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information stems largely from industry chatter and lacks official confirmation.

Tencent's reputation as a leader in the mobile gaming sector makes this potential collaboration with Square Enix particularly noteworthy. This partnership aligns with Square Enix's recent announcement in May, where the company expressed its intention to "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy" for its flagship titles, including Final Fantasy. This move signifies a strategic expansion into multiplatform gaming, promising exciting new ways for fans to experience their favorite games.
