Scopely Acquires Niantic, Developer of Pokémon GO
Scopely has made headlines with its recent acquisition of Niantic, a move that brings some of the biggest names in augmented reality gaming under its umbrella. This monumental business deal, valued at $3.5 billion, includes iconic games like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Pokémon GO, despite being nearly a decade old, continues to thrive with over 100 million unique players in 2024, consistently ranking in the top 10 mobile games since its 2016 launch.
Pikmin Bloom, launched by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo in 2021, has also seen a significant rise in popularity in 2024. The game, which encourages players to plant virtual flowers as they walk, recorded an astounding 3.94 trillion steps last year. In-person events in Japan, the U.S., and Germany attracted thousands of enthusiastic fans, highlighting the game's community engagement.
Monster Hunter Now, Niantic's latest addition, has already surpassed 15 million downloads since its September 2023 launch. Alongside the games, Niantic's development teams and companion apps like Campfire and Wayfarer will also transition to Scopely. Campfire facilitates real-world gameplay connections, while Wayfarer helps map new locations for Niantic games. In 2024, over six million players used Campfire to attend in-person events, and Wayfarer has added over 11.5 million new location points since its 2019 launch.
What Does the Scopely and Niantic Deal Mean for Players?
For players, the transition to Scopely should be seamless. Scopely's impressive portfolio, which includes titles like MONOPOLY GO!, Stumble Guys, Star Trek Fleet Command, and MARVEL Strike Force, suggests that Niantic's games will continue to flourish. Scopely has committed to enhancing the development teams with additional resources and introducing innovative features like advanced AR interactions to Niantic's games. This promises an exciting future for players, who can look forward to these enhancements rolling out soon.
On a related note, don't miss out on Pokémon GO's Festival of Colors, available now on the Google Play Store. And before you go, be sure to catch up on the latest with KartRider Rush+ as it launches Season 31, featuring the exciting theme of Journey to the West.
