"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
The curtains have fallen on Evil Dead: The Game, an asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the iconic action horror franchise. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game garnered an 8/10 from IGN, who described it as a "compelling and exhilarating" experience, albeit "rough around the edges," much like the horror/comedies that fueled its creation. Despite the launch of a Game of the Year Edition the following year, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, alongside the cessation of new content development.
Now, three years after its initial release, Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher, Saber Interactive. However, the game's servers will remain active, allowing existing owners to continue their adventures in this horror-filled world. Saber Interactive took to the game's Steam page to announce the decision:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The news has sparked a wave of negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players mourning the game's effective demise, leading to an overall 'mixed' user review rating. Amidst the disappointment, one player with over 380 hours of playtime left a positive note: "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for their recent success with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to expand their portfolio with several exciting projects on the horizon. These include John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, as well as Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
