"Civ 7's 1.1.1 Update Struggles to Compete with Civ 6 and Civ 5 on Steam"

May 06,25

Firaxis, the developer behind the acclaimed Civilization series, has released details on the significant update 1.1.1 for Civilization 7. This update arrives at a time when the game is struggling to attract players on Steam, with a 24-hour peak player count of 16,921, which falls short of making it into Steam's top 100 most-played games. In contrast, the older Civilization 5, released in 2010, boasts a slightly higher peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, launched in 2016, significantly outperforms with a peak of 40,676 players.

In an effort to address player feedback and improve the gaming experience, Firaxis has outlined several enhancements in Update 1.1.1. These include:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder: Mount Everest
  • Additional UI Updates & Polish
  • Settlement & Commander Renaming
  • And more!

Lead designer Ed Beach elaborated on these changes in a video, directing players to the full patch notes, which are set to be released soon.

Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:

Quick Move is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu, allowing units to move to their destination instantly for a faster gameplay experience.

A new start position option related to map generation has been introduced. For single-player games, the default setting is now 'Standard,' which offers more varied and less predictable continents, similar to Civilization 6. In multiplayer, the 'Balanced' setting remains to ensure a level playing field with consistent maps.

Players can now rename settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their gameplay. Additionally, a restart button allows players to regenerate the map with new seeds while retaining their leader and civilization choices, mirroring a feature from Civilization 6.

UI improvements include a persistent city and town panel when making purchases, new notifications for cities under attack, indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also brings significant changes to the game's pacing.

Alongside these updates, a new civilization, Bulgaria, is being introduced along with Nepal and the new leader Simón Bolívar as part of the paid Crossroads of the World Collection, launching today, March 25.

Despite these efforts, Civilization 7 has faced criticism and controversy among series veterans for its new mechanics. The game has received a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam and a 7/10 from IGN. In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed optimism that the "legacy Civ audience" would eventually embrace the game, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
