At a recent UK conference, former Larian Studios writer Baudelaire Welch discussed the impact of Baldur's Gate 3's (BG3) infamous bear romance scene, highlighting its significance in gaming history.

The "Daddy Halsin" Phenomenon

Welch, BG3's companion narrative lead, lauded the scene as a "watershed moment," praising Larian Studios for uniquely acknowledging and incorporating the desires of the game's fanfiction community. The scene features a romance option with Halsin, a druid who transforms into a bear. While initially intended for combat, Halsin's bear form became a crucial element of his romance arc, reflecting his emotional struggles. Welch revealed this wasn't the original plan, but rather a response to the fervent "Daddy Halsin" desires expressed within the game's fanfiction.

"I don't think there were specific plans for him to be a love interest," Welch told Eurogamer, emphasizing the community's influence.

Welch's presentation underscored the vital role fanfiction plays in sustaining a game's community. He noted the enduring appeal of romance within fan-created content, keeping the community engaged long after the game's release. This, he added, is particularly relevant to women and LGBTQIA+ players, who have been highly influential in BG3's ongoing popularity.

"This scene represents a pivotal moment where the fanfiction community isn't a niche group, but a major audience whose preferences are directly addressed," Welch stated.

From Gag to Game-Changing Romance

The bear transformation in a romantic context initially began as a lighthearted, off-screen joke. However, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke and senior writer John Corcoran recognized its potential and integrated it into Halsin's romance storyline.

"The bear transformation was initially a gag for another scene," Welch admitted. "But Swen and John, while developing the major romance scenes, decided to elevate it and make it a central part of Halsin's character."
