Capcom's Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Launch Celebrated with Bunraku Theater Performance

Capcom marked the July 19th release of its action strategy game, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, with a unique collaboration: a traditional Japanese Bunraku puppet theater performance. This innovative approach aimed to showcase the game's deep roots in Japanese folklore to a global audience, highlighting the cultural heritage interwoven into its design.

The Osaka-based National Bunraku Theater, celebrating its 40th anniversary, created a special performance titled "Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden's Destiny." This Bunraku production, featuring large puppets manipulated to a samisen soundtrack, served as a prequel to the game's story, bringing the protagonists Soh and the Maiden to life. Master Puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake, utilizing traditional Bunraku techniques, led the performance.

"Bunraku, born and raised in Osaka, mirrors Capcom's own history in this region," Kiritake commented. "This collaboration extends our shared efforts beyond Osaka to a worldwide audience."

The performance blended tradition with modern technology, employing computer-generated (CG) backdrops depicting the game's world. Capcom aimed to use its platform to introduce the captivating world of Bunraku to a global audience and emphasize the game's strong Japanese cultural identity.

Producer Tairoku Nozoe explained that director Shuichi Kawata's passion for Bunraku significantly influenced the game's development. The team drew inspiration from the movements and direction of "Ningyo Joruri Bunraku," and even before the collaboration, Bunraku elements were already integrated into Kunitsu-Gami. The experience of attending a Bunraku performance together solidified their decision to partner with the National Bunraku Theater.
