Get Ready for the Xbox Android App: Game Purchases Coming in November!

Earlier this year, Xbox president Sarah Bond hinted at a mobile storefront. Now, it appears an Xbox Android app with exciting new features is launching as early as next month!

The Details:

The Xbox mobile app is expected to arrive in November, allowing Android users to purchase and play games directly within the app. This announcement, shared by Sarah Bond on X (formerly Twitter), highlights the impact of a recent court ruling that will force the Google Play Store to offer more diverse options and greater flexibility for developers.

This ruling stems from Google's four-year antitrust battle with Epic Games. The court mandated that Google provide rival app stores access to its entire app catalog and distribute third-party stores for three years (November 1st, 2024 to November 1st, 2027), unless individual developers opt out.

Why is this a big deal?

While an existing Xbox Android app allows game downloads to Xbox consoles and cloud streaming for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, the November update introduces direct game purchasing through the app itself.

The full scope of the new Xbox app’s features will be revealed in November. For more in-depth information, check out the CNBC article linked above.
