During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was revealed that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker from the GameCube will make its way to the Switch 2. This sparked curiosity among fans about the potential porting of Wind Waker HD to the next-generation console.

Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these speculations. In an episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily aired on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared insights from a conversation with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked if the availability of Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) would prevent Wind Waker HD from being ported to the Switch 2, Bihldorff responded affirmatively, stating, "no, all options are on the table." This leaves room for hope, although no concrete decisions have been made yet.

Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker received a significant upgrade with Wind Waker HD on the Wii U in 2013. This enhanced version boasts several improvements, including a leap from 480p to HD visuals, enhanced lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and other gameplay refinements. Since the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for owners of the original Switch to experience this beloved game.

In related news, the game libraries on Nintendo Switch Online are now being rebranded as Nintendo Classics. Nintendo has confirmed that "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games to be added in the future." These games will also feature in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
