The beasts that roam the Forbidden Lands in *Monster Hunter Wilds* are each as fearsome as the next. Uth Duna, a striking leviathan-type monster, is one you'll encounter early in the game, and if you're eager to reap its rewards, here's a comprehensive guide on how to beat and capture it.

You'll first encounter Uth Duna in the **Scarlet Forest** during the mission questline of Chapter 1. After overcoming other notable foes such as Lala Barina and Congalala, you and your companion Alma will rendezvous with Olivia and Erik, who are investigating a nearby dam. However, as the weather takes a drastic turn, Uth Duna will reveal itself amidst a raging monsoon during **Mission 1-5: Beyond the Deluge**. Your next objective will be to defeat this beast before it causes further havoc.

How to Beat and Capture Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds

Uth Duna, known as **‘A Feast in the Deep’**, emerges when the waters in the Scarlet Forest rise to dangerous levels. As the region’s apex predator, confronting it will be significantly more challenging than other monsters you've faced so far in the story.

Before engaging Uth Duna, equip a **thunder-element weapon** if available (Rey Dau in Mission 2-2 provides your first chance at this). Alternatively, wear gear or use a Talisman like **Water Charm I** to boost your **water resistance**. Ensure you're well-prepared by enjoying a good meal to maintain high Health and Stamina levels. Don't forget to bring **Nulberries** to counteract **Waterblight**, the primary status ailment Uth Duna can inflict.

Uth Duna Attacks and Weaknesses

Uth Duna's weak points

When fighting Uth Duna, be aware of its iridescent fins on its legs and tail, which act as a **‘Veil’** that temporarily increases its defense but slows its movement. Inflicting enough damage on the veil will cause the fins to retract, exposing Uth Duna's weak points, such as its **Head (breakable), Mouth, Tail (breakable), and both Forelegs (breakable)**. Once the fins are gone, Uth Duna becomes more aggressive and increases its attack frequency, requiring you to stay nimble in the water.

Uth Duna primarily uses physical attacks, utilizing its size to inflict damage and create waves that hinder your movement. Key attacks to watch out for include:

  • **Belly Slam** – Uth Duna rises on its back legs, exposing its belly, and then falls forward for a slam attack.
  • **Roar** – Similar to other monsters, Uth Duna's roar can immobilize you for a few seconds.
  • **Body Coil** – It coils up its body, spins, and then lashes its tail out in a swiping attack.
  • **Aerial Twirl** – Like a whale leaping over water, Uth Duna performs a twirling leap into the air before slamming back down, covering a wide area.
  • **Leg Swipe** – When engaged at close range, it may swipe at you with its clawed feet.

After defeating Uth Duna at least once, you can review its weaknesses in your Field Guide.

Should You Capture or Kill Uth Duna?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Uth Duna near the end of the battle. To capture it, weaken the monster until it's "tired" or "exhausted" (nearly dead), then use **Shock Traps** or **Pitfall Traps**. Once trapped, deploy at least one **Tranq Bomb** to knock it out, completing the capture.

Both capturing and killing the monster are viable, with the main difference being the item rewards you can obtain. While the exact differences in items are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Uth Duna:
