Upgrade Prerequisites:

Before upgrading, you need the Staff of Ice itself. Obtain it from the Mystery Box or by collecting its three parts. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus (via the Door to Nowhere) is crucial.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals rapidly using the Staff of Ice. These crystals reside in underground lanterns (black frame, purple fire). Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid speed. Optimize your route—starting in the tomb area, then Shrine of the Hierophants, and finally the Subterranean Temple entrance lantern is recommended. Archibald's quote confirms success. Enter the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Dark Aether Nexus Floating Rocks

Locate three floating rocks with glowing purple Runes in the Dark Aether Nexus. Each Rune has a unique symbol. Shoot each Rune with the Staff of Ice (a hitmarker confirms success). This lowers the rocks, making the symbols easier to identify. A sniper rifle might improve accuracy. The order is irrelevant; shoot all three.

Step 3: Rune Symbol Puzzle

Find a stone wall replacing a portal back to the main map. Locate the corresponding area on the map; a wall with Runic symbols will appear. Shoot the three symbols matching the ones noted on the floating rocks. The portal will open (regardless of accuracy). Incorrect symbols teleport you back to the Dark Aether Nexus from mid-air. Try again later if needed. Correct symbols place you on a floating rock with a purple orb. Interact with it.

Step 4: Soul Chest Orb Escort

The Orb begins moving. Kill zombies near it; their essence fuels the Orb. Keep it moving towards the central structure in the Dark Aether Nexus. Once settled, a small purple portal appears. Interact to upgrade the Staff of Ice to Ull's Arrow.
