Top 10 LitRPG Books to Read in 2025
Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. While I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, nothing quite matches the thrill of diving deep into a captivating book series. My love for reading sparked with the Harry Potter books and has since blossomed into an exploration of various genres like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction. However, it was the LitRPG genre that truly captured my heart and became my reading obsession. If you're eager to explore this exciting genre with me, here are my top recommendations:

One of the great advantages of these books is that they are all accessible through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive nature of these series, subscribing can be a cost-effective way to enjoy them. Additionally, all these titles are available with an Audible subscription if you prefer listening over reading.
What Is LitRPG?
For newcomers to the genre, LitRPG, or literary role-playing game, integrates elements similar to those found in video games into the narrative. While some stories might involve characters being pulled into a video game world, the genre is broader. LitRPG books typically feature a leveling system and a power hierarchy that characters must navigate through their experiences. The selections I've highlighted include both pure LitRPG and progression fantasy, offering a similar immersive experience.
He Who Fights with Monsters
Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters
95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
He Who Fights with Monsters is a thrilling, action-packed series with some of the most memorable lines I've ever encountered. The unique leveling system and compelling characters make it a must-read, especially if you enjoy fantasy with a touch of humor. This is my top LitRPG series, and each new installment is as captivating as the first.
The story follows Jason Asano, who finds himself in a magical world inside a hedge maze, endowed with new powers and no hair. His quirky yet determined approach to his bizarre situation helps him navigate challenges ranging from cannibals and monsters to complex personal relationships. With a morally ambiguous protagonist, this series is a delightful journey from start to finish.
He Who Fights with Monsters is currently on its 11th book, with more to come from the author, Shirtaloon.
The Path of Ascension
### The Path of Ascension
33Book 1 of 8.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Path of Ascension offers a non-traditional LitRPG experience where the main character isn't transported to another world. Instead, it introduces a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals called rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.
The narrative follows Matt, a young orphan driven by the dream of entering rifts to battle the monsters that killed his parents. However, his aspirations are challenged when he discovers his Tier 1 talent, which seems to hinder his path. Through perseverance and hard work, Matt seeks to overcome his limitations and grow stronger.
While the first book hooked me, it was the character development in books two and three that cemented this series as one of my favorites.
Dungeon Crawler Carl
### Dungeon Crawler Carl
74Book 1 of 7.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Dungeon Crawler Carl is a fast-paced adventure that maintains its momentum throughout. It features a refreshing main character who defies common tropes and a delightful cat named Princess Donut, who might just steal the show. This series is a standout in the LitRPG genre.
The story revolves around Carl, who finds himself trapped with his ex-girlfriend's cat when the world ends. Together, they are thrust into an underground dungeon hosting an intergalactic game show, orchestrated by advanced races and a wild AI. Filled with witty dialogue, action, and skill progression, this series offers a fun and engaging read.
The seventh book, released in 2024, continues to captivate as much as the first. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also worth exploring if you enjoy his writing style.
Unsouled (Cradle Series)
### Unsouled (Cradle Series)
32Book 1 of 12.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Cradle series, like The Path of Ascension, immerses you in a richly developed world without the need for the main character to be transported elsewhere. With its unique power cultivation system and endearing protagonist, Unsouled is a top pick for fantasy lovers exploring the edges of LitRPG.
The story centers on Lindon, born "Unsouled" and seemingly destined for a life without the sacred arts. Despite his intelligence and determination, his path appears blocked until a celestial intervention offers him a new direction.
With 12 books culminating in a satisfying conclusion, the Cradle series is a must-read. Additionally, exploring more works by Will Wight is highly recommended.
Beware of Chicken
### Beware of Chicken
30Book 1 of 4.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Beware of Chicken stands out on this list for its unique approach. While most LitRPG series are packed with action, this one takes a more serene path, following a man who abandons the pursuit of power to embrace farming.
The protagonist, Jin Rou, was a cultivator striving for martial arts mastery until his death. A person from Earth then inhabits his consciousness, choosing a peaceful life over the cultivator's path. Jin Rou's journey into farming leads him to unexpected friendships, family, and a source of power he never anticipated.
This series is perfect for those seeking a relaxing read with a LitRPG twist.
Defiance of the Fall
### Defiance of the Fall
36Book 1 of 15.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Defiance of the Fall is the longest series on my list, offering a rewarding long-term commitment. Starting with an explosive first book, the series keeps you engaged as the protagonist faces continuous challenges.
The story begins with Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone when Earth integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with quests and notifications, Zac must survive an alien invasion with only a hatchet and his wits. As he fights to reunite with his family, he uncovers the secrets of this new multiverse.
With 14 books out and a 15th on the way, Defiance of the Fall offers a deep dive into a unique leveling system and skill progression, expanding significantly beyond Earth.
Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)
### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)
30Book 1 of 5.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Arcane Ascension series eschews traditional stat sheets and complex leveling systems for a world governed by god-like beings who grant special "attunements" to those who survive their dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is fascinating, unfolding as the protagonist explores its potential.
The story is narrated in the first person by Corin Cadence, who enters the Serpent Spire to earn his attunement after losing his brother there. Inside the spires, he uncovers more mysteries, aided by new friends at Lorian Heights Academy.
Sufficiently Advanced Magic was my gateway to LitRPG. With its magic school setting reminiscent of Harry Potter and a rich fantasy backdrop, it's an excellent introduction to the genre. Andrew Rowe's companion series also enhance the main storyline, making them well worth reading.
The Grand Game
### The Grand Game
15Book 1 of 9.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
If you're a fan of stealth games, The Grand Game is a must-read. Unlike other series on this list, its protagonist is an assassin who navigates challenges through stealth and cunning.
The narrative follows Michael, who awakens in the Forever Kingdom with no memory except his name. Amidst other newcomers, he must learn to survive and advance in a dungeon filled with monsters. As he levels up and acquires new skills, he uncovers the workings of the world governed by the elite Powers and his role in the Grand Game.
This series offers a fresh perspective on the genre, with seven books currently available and two more up for preorder.
The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)
### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)
30Book 1 of 11.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Completionist Chronicles are perfect for those new to LitRPG. They incorporate familiar RPG elements with unique twists, making them hard to put down.
The series centers on Joe, an ex-military medic who, after a severe injury, uses a wheelchair. When an old friend offers him a chance to immerse himself in a new virtual MMORPG, he takes it and discovers a new life within the game. As a Ritualist, Joe uses his unique skills to level up through quests.
Later books expand into different worlds, but the series remains a fun and engaging read throughout.
Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)
### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)
23See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Underworld series is a slow burn, set in a literal underworld rather than a fantastical realm. It follows Elorian, an average high school gamer who suddenly finds himself trapped in the underworld with other gamers.
Despite gaining magical powers and the ability to level up indefinitely, none of them are thrilled to be there. An ancient succubus has brought them to drain their power as they navigate the dungeons beneath the Earth's crust. With a cast of vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series is an adventure-filled introduction to LitRPG.
