Take-Two CEO Affirms Support for Legacy Games Amid GTA Online's Future Uncertainty Post-GTA 6

Mar 27,25

The anticipation surrounding the release of *Grand Theft Auto 6* (GTA 6) has sparked numerous questions among the dedicated player base of *GTA Online*. As the fall 2025 release date for GTA 6 draws near, players are increasingly curious about the future of the current *GTA Online* experience. This live service, which has been a significant revenue generator for Rockstar Games, continues to attract players even a decade after its initial launch. The success of *GTA Online* has notably influenced Rockstar's focus on live services over story-based DLCs for *Grand Theft Auto 5*, a decision that has not been without its critics.

With the impending release of GTA 6, there is speculation about the introduction of a new version of *GTA Online*, possibly dubbed *GTA Online 2*. This has raised concerns among current players about the potential obsolescence of their investments in the existing *GTA Online*. The question on many players' minds is whether it's worth continuing to invest time and money into the current version when a new iteration might be just around the corner.

In a recent interview with IGN, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, addressed these concerns indirectly. While he couldn't comment specifically on any unannounced projects, Zelnick drew parallels with Take-Two's approach to *NBA 2K Online*. Launched in 2012, *NBA 2K Online* was followed by *NBA 2K Online 2* in 2017, and both versions have been maintained simultaneously, allowing players to continue enjoying the original without being forced to transition to the newer version.

Zelnick emphasized Take-Two's commitment to supporting their properties as long as there is an engaged community. He stated, "But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles... We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them." This suggests that *GTA Online* might continue to be supported even after the launch of *GTA Online 2*, provided there remains a significant player base.

As we approach the release of GTA 6, with only Trailer 1 and a release window to go on, much remains unknown. However, Rockstar will likely need to provide more details soon, especially with other major releases like *Borderlands 4* slated for September 2025. In the meantime, players can ponder Zelnick's comments on the potential strategy for *GTA Online* and whether skipping a PC launch for GTA 6 might be a misstep.
